Elbow's main problem with being a writer versus being an academic is that there is so much difference that it is hard to teach freshman students which one to be. Elbow argues that it is important for the student as a writer to know more than the person for whom he or she is writing. He does not want the stance to be one of questioning whether or not the writing is all right, but one where the writer can proudly proclaim that he or she knows something the reader did not.  In the end, Elbow wants to writer to be someone who can change the world.
